Tanzania is a resource blessed or resources curse ?
A country’s mineral wealth should be a blessing for its people. However, experience in various countries has shown that the endowment with mineral wealth can prove to be very problematic instead – a phenomenon known as the “resource curse”.
In recent years, discovery and exploitation of minerals in Eastern Africa has rapidly expanded. This raises questions and concerns about their impact on the future of the region.
Program manager from governance link Mr. Pentalione Shoki, said that, Tanzania is a relatively late arrival to large-scale mining, the history and current status of discovery and exploitation of mineral resources in Tanzania, about the socio-economic implications, and about the legal and political framework in which mining in Tanzania operates.
Shoki added that, if timely investments are made in promoting and implementing good practices in the mining sector, the problems that have plagued other resource-rich countries can be avoided in East Africa.
Tanzania is a land rich in minerals, mining makes up more than 50% of the country’s total export of which a large part comes from gold, The country has gold reserves of 45 million ounce, generating revenue of over a billion USD. Diamond are also found in significant amounts, since it was opened in 1940.
William diamond mine has produced 19 million carats (3.800) of diamond, Gemstones, nickel, copper, uranium, ka0lin, titanium, cobalt and platinum are also mined in Tanzania.
Apart from having resources blessed but the Tanzanian’s government has role to perform on deciding whether Tanzania is resources blessed or resource course
